Ercan Airport Transfer: How to Get from ECN to Kyrenia and Esentepe
25 August 2026
Almost every holiday in North Cyprus begins the same way: a late-evening landing at Ercan International Airport (ECN) after a connection through Turkey. Here is what to expect and how to get from the terminal to your villa without stress.
What happens on arrival at Ercan
Ercan is small and straightforward. Passport control is quick, and your entry stamp goes on a loose slip of paper rather than in your passport. Baggage reclaim is a single hall. From wheels-down to standing outside with your suitcase is typically 25-40 minutes.
There are ATMs and a currency desk in the arrivals hall, but you do not need Turkish Lira immediately — cards work at the supermarket and most restaurants.
Journey times from Ercan
- Nicosia (Lefkosa): 15-20 minutes
- Kyrenia (Girne): 35-40 minutes over the mountain pass
- Esentepe: 45-55 minutes along the north coast
- Famagusta: 45 minutes
- Iskele / Long Beach: 55-65 minutes
The road to Kyrenia climbs over the Besparmak range and drops towards the sea — in daylight it is one of the best introductions to the island you could ask for.
Your options, honestly compared
Private transfer (what we include)
A driver waits in the arrivals hall with your name, takes the luggage and drives you directly to the property. Nothing is negotiated at midnight, the price is fixed in advance, and if your flight is delayed the driver simply waits. Every booking with us includes a complimentary Ercan airport transfer in both directions.
Airport taxi
Taxis are available outside arrivals. They are metered only sometimes, so agree the fare before you get in. Expect a fare in the region of £35-55 to Kyrenia depending on time of day and vehicle size.
Hire car from the airport
Sensible if you plan to explore, less sensible as your very first act after a long day of flying. A good compromise, and the one we usually recommend: take the transfer on arrival and have a hire car delivered to the villa the next morning. Remember that driving is on the left.
Public bus
There is a shuttle service towards Nicosia and onward connections, but with luggage, an evening arrival and a villa in a hillside village, it is rarely worth the saving.
Practical arrival tips
- Send us your flight number, not just the arrival time — we track the flight, so delays are handled automatically.
- Buy a local SIM or activate roaming before you land; villa directions are much easier with data.
- If you land after 22:00, ask us to arrange a welcome grocery pack so you are not hunting for milk at midnight.
- Child seats are free but must be requested when you book — say the child's age, not just "a seat".
Flying into Larnaca instead
Some guests find a cheaper direct flight to Larnaca in the south. It works: the drive north takes roughly two hours plus the crossing. Note that most southern hire cars are not insured to cross, so a transfer is usually the practical answer. We can quote for a Larnaca pick-up — just ask when you enquire.
