North Cyprus Holidays: The Complete Travel Guide for First-Time Visitors

If you are researching North Cyprus holidays for the first time, the island can feel like a puzzle: the flights connect through Turkey, the currency is not what you expect, and half the guidebooks describe the south instead. This guide answers the questions guests actually ask us before booking a holiday villa in North Cyprus.

Where exactly is North Cyprus?

North Cyprus occupies the northern third of the island of Cyprus, in the eastern Mediterranean, roughly 100km south of Turkey. The main holiday areas run along the north coast: Kyrenia (Girne) with its Venetian harbour, the quieter village of Esentepe under the Besparmak mountains, and the long sandy beaches around Iskele on the east coast. Inland sits the divided capital, Nicosia (Lefkosa).

How to get to North Cyprus

Nearly every visitor arrives through Ercan International Airport (ECN). Flights reach Ercan via a Turkish airport — Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir or Antalya — with a short stop or a change of aircraft. From London the total journey is typically six to seven hours including the connection.

The alternative is flying into Larnaca in the south and crossing the island by road, which takes around two hours plus the border formality. Most guests find the Ercan route simpler because we meet you at arrivals: our Ercan airport transfer is complimentary with every booking, and the drive to Kyrenia or Esentepe takes about 45 minutes.

Visas, passports and the border

British and most EU nationals do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days. Your passport should have at least six months left on it. Entry stamps are given on a separate slip rather than in the passport, so travelling on to the south or to Greece later is not a problem. Always check the current rules for your own nationality before you fly.

When to visit: the short version

North Cyprus enjoys more than 300 days of sunshine a year, so there is no truly bad time to come — only different holidays.

• June to September — beach weather, 30-38°C, sea around 27°C. Book early; this is peak season and the minimum stay rises to seven nights.
• April, May, October — our favourite months. Warm enough to swim, cool enough to walk the Kyrenia mountain trails and visit St Hilarion Castle without wilting.
• November to March — mild at 10-18°C, greener than you expect, and the cheapest time to rent a large villa. Ideal for long stays and winter escapes.

Where to stay: villa, apartment or hotel?

Hotels cluster in Kyrenia and around the casinos. Most families and groups choose a private rental instead, and the reason is simple arithmetic: a three-bedroom villa with a private pool usually costs less per night than three hotel rooms, and it comes with a kitchen, a garden and no fixed mealtimes.

Money, prices and what a week actually costs

The official currency is the Turkish Lira, but sterling and euros are accepted almost everywhere and rents are usually quoted in GBP. Card payment is normal in restaurants and supermarkets; keep some cash for village markets and beach kiosks.

Day-to-day costs are noticeably lower than in Spain, Portugal or southern Cyprus. A generous dinner for two with wine typically lands between £30 and £45. A week's car hire runs from about £150 in low season. Museum and castle entry is a few pounds.

Getting around

Rent a car. Public transport exists but it will not take you to the empty beach at Alagadi at sunset or up to Buffavento castle. Driving is on the left, roads are quiet outside Kyrenia, and distances are short — the whole coast is drivable in a day. We can arrange a car with a trusted local supplier when you book.

Food you should not miss

A sensible first-week plan

1. Day 1 — arrive at Ercan, transfer to the villa, dinner at a village restaurant.
2. Day 2 — beach and pool. Do nothing on purpose.
3. Day 3 — Kyrenia harbour, the castle and the Shipwreck Museum.
4. Day 4 — St Hilarion Castle in the morning, Bellapais Abbey in the afternoon.
5. Day 5 — Alagadi turtle beach, or the Karpaz peninsula for wild donkeys and empty sand.
6. Day 6 — Famagusta's walled city and the ruins of Salamis.
7. Day 7 — market, meze, packing.
