The Best Time to Visit North Cyprus: A Month-by-Month Guide
1 September 2026
"When is the best time to visit North Cyprus?" is the question we are asked most, and the honest answer is that it depends entirely on what you want from the week. Here is what each part of the year actually feels like on the ground in Kyrenia and Esentepe.
Quick answer
- Best weather overall: May and October — warm sea, comfortable air, everything open.
- Best for beach holidays: late June to early September.
- Best value: November to March, when large villas drop to a fraction of summer rates.
- Best for walking and sightseeing: March to May.
Spring: March, April, May
Spring is when the island shows off. The hills behind Esentepe turn green, wild orchids appear along the Besparmak ridge, and daytime temperatures climb from around 18°C in March to a very pleasant 26-28°C by late May. The sea warms slowly — swimmable from mid-May for most people, earlier if you are British.
This is the ideal window for St Hilarion Castle, Bellapais Abbey and the Karpaz peninsula, because you can walk for hours without the summer heat. Villa rates are still low-season until around mid-May.
Summer: June, July, August, September
Proper Mediterranean summer: reliably 32-38°C inland, a few degrees cooler on the coast, and sea temperatures of 26-28°C. Rain is essentially non-existent. This is high season, so the villas with private pools go first and minimum stays rise to seven nights.
Practical advice for a summer stay: choose somewhere with a pool and air conditioning in every bedroom, plan sightseeing for before 11am, and accept that the middle of the day belongs to the shade. September is the sleeper hit — the sea is at its warmest of the entire year and the crowds have thinned.
Autumn: October, November
October is arguably the best month of the year. Air temperatures sit around 26-28°C, the sea is still at 25°C from the summer, the light is beautiful and prices have come off their peak. November cools to about 20°C with the first proper rain, but sunny days still outnumber grey ones.
Winter: December, January, February
Winter in North Cyprus surprises people. Daytime highs run 15-18°C, the countryside is greener than at any other time, and the mountains occasionally get a dusting of snow that you can photograph from a warm terrace. Rain arrives in bursts rather than drizzle — a wet morning is usually followed by a bright afternoon.
For long-stay guests and anyone escaping a northern European winter, this is the best-value time of year. A large villa that is fully booked in August can be remarkably affordable in January. Look for a property with proper heating and a wood burner.
Sea temperature at a glance
- January–March: 17-18°C (bracing)
- April–May: 19-22°C (swimmable by late May)
- June–August: 25-28°C (bath-like)
- September–October: 26-25°C (the sweet spot)
- November–December: 22-19°C (still fine for a quick swim)
What about crowds?
North Cyprus is quiet by Mediterranean standards even in August — there is no equivalent of the Spanish costas here. The busiest weeks are late July to mid-August, plus the Turkish public holidays. Outside those windows, you will often have a beach like Alagadi largely to yourself on a weekday.
So when should you book?
If you want heat and beach days, book June to September and book early. If you want the best all-round week — swimming, sightseeing, restaurants with tables free — aim for May or October. If you want space and value, come in winter and stay longer.
