Fresh Mediterranean dishes with a unique Cypriot twist

Mediterranean Flavours

The cuisine of Northern Cyprus is as diverse as the cultures that have helped create it. Fresh Mediterranean dishes with a Cypriot twist await you, featuring locally grown ingredients and traditional recipes passed down through generations. Olive oil, fresh herbs, grilled meats, and seasonal vegetables form the foundation of most dishes.

Meze Culture

No visit to North Cyprus is complete without experiencing a traditional meze - an array of small dishes shared among friends and family. A typical meze includes hummus, cacik (yogurt with cucumber and garlic), hellim (halloumi cheese), köfte (meatballs), dolma (stuffed vine leaves), and fresh salads. It's a social dining experience meant to be savored over several hours.

Fresh Seafood

With its long Mediterranean coastline, Northern Cyprus offers exceptional fresh seafood. Visit harbourside restaurants in Kyrenia or the fishing village of Boğaz for grilled sea bream, sea bass, calamari, octopus, and traditional fish meze. The catch of the day is always the best choice.

Signature Dishes

Don't miss trying şeftali kebab - minced lamb and pork wrapped in lamb caul and grilled to perfection. Other must-try dishes include molohiya (a traditional stew with lamb), kleftiko (slow-roasted lamb), and the famous Cypriot hellim cheese, best enjoyed grilled or fried. Pilavuna (stuffed pastry) and börek (filo pastry) are popular snacks.

Cypriot Breakfast

A traditional Cypriot breakfast is a feast in itself. Expect fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, olives, hellim cheese, eggs, honey, homemade jams, and fresh bread from local bakeries. Many villages still bake bread in traditional wood-fired ovens.

Sweet Treats & Drinks

Finish your meal with traditional desserts like baklava, şamali (semolina cake with syrup), or the famous Cypriot delight (lokum). Fresh seasonal fruits are abundant and delicious. Turkish coffee is the traditional drink, though you'll find excellent local wine from the emerging Cypriot wine industry. Zivania, a grape-based spirit, is the local digestif.
